Common questions
What makes Fathom different from other schools?+
We're in Jemeluk Bay, one of only three schools here, most other schools in Amed are on sandy-bottom points without a reef. Groups are capped at 3 students. We also teach spearfishing, with a path through to guided charter trips if you want to go further.
Where do the confined water sessions take place?+
Confined water sessions are held in a calm, shallow, sheltered location near the school, chosen by your instructor to suit the course and conditions. Your instructor confirms the exact spot with you before your first session.
What if I have a medical condition?+
A medical questionnaire is only required for Molchanov-certified courses (Wave 1, 2, 3), not for Fun Dives, Spearfishing, or Coaching sessions. For courses that do require it, you'll complete it on arrival, and in some cases a doctor's sign-off may be needed. Contact us before booking if you have specific concerns.
Can I book a private one-on-one course?+
Yes. Private courses are available at twice the standard price. Contact us to arrange dates.
What payment methods do you accept?+
A deposit is paid online by card (no fee) to secure your booking, the amount depends on the course or activity. The remaining balance is due on arrival, payable by cash, bank transfer, or card (3% fee).
Is accommodation included?+
Accommodation is not included. See our list of recommended places to stay nearby, including two Airbnb apartments.
How do I get to Amed?+
Private transfers from the airport cost approximately IDR 700,000-800,000 and take around 3 hours. You can also rent and self-drive a motorbike if you are comfortable riding one, or book a Grab car. Contact us to arrange a transfer. Tourist shuttle buses also run to Amed from the main areas of Bali, a cheaper option than a private car: Perama Tour. If you're a confident rider with the right licence, you can also come up by scooter.
Can you arrange hotel pick-up in Amed?+
Yes, transport can be arranged. Price depends on your accommodation's distance from the school. Pickup is not guaranteed, because it depends on how busy we are. Please ask us when you book and we will tell you if we can.
When's the best time of year?+
We run courses year round. Water clarity is generally best from April to October, the dry season. December to February is the rainy season, which can sometimes reduce water visibility.
Can I change my booking date?+
Yes, with more than 48 hours notice, your new date will need to fit our available schedule rather than being any date you choose. Deposits are valid for 6 months and can be transferred once.
What's the refund policy?+
Deposits and final payments are non-refundable. Missed sessions can be rescheduled within the policy terms, full terms and conditions available separately.
Why is your Wave 1 course cheaper than other schools?+
Certification isn't included in the course price, it's a separate fee, paid only if you pass. Some schools include certification in their price regardless of outcome, so you're paying for it whether you actually earn it or not. Here, that cost only applies once you've achieved it.
What if I only have one day?+
Discover Freediving is our one-day option, IDR 2,600,000, with no certification included. Add day two later for IDR 2,400,000, or book the full Wave 1 course up front for IDR 4,500,000 and save IDR 500,000. See Discover Freediving.
